As a self-described "preacher's kid," Pastor Cory's life has centered around the church. Growing up in Montevallo, Alabama, he and his brother were frequently the entire "children's ministry," as his father served small churches in hard-to-reach areas. Cory accepted Christ at age 9, and felt the call to ministry at age 16. By the time he attended Jacksonville State University, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, he'd met his wife Wendy at church camp. Today, they have two daughters and a son. Cory also holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He joins Brushy Creek after serving more than a decade at Elkdale Baptist Church in Selma, Alabama.
A dummy brought Benji to God. No joke. The Georgia native was nine-years-old when he heard a ventriloquist talk about salvation through Jesus Christ. Benji's lips moved, saying, "I believe." In high school, the avid baseball player and hunter committed to enter full-time ministry. Benji attended North Greenville University, where he married his best friend Kristi. Together, they both earned degrees at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. As he approaches a decade of service at Brushy Creek, Benji balances work, three active children, and Doctorate of Ministry studies at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
In 5th grade, Angela knew God was leading her to do something, she just didn’t know what. For years, she told God she’d do whatever He asked. The request came after she’d graduated from Clemson University and was teaching elementary school. The teacher left the blackboard to become a student again, earning a Masters at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Angela joined Brushy Creek’s staff in 2001, first as College Minister, and now as the Women's and Education Minister. She loves doting on her niece, nephew and black Lab, Roxy, and runs away to Disney as often as she can.
The self-described, one-time "doubter," now works tirelessly to introduce Jesus to the world. Jim admits he was probably agnostic, until a pastor convinced him to read Matthew 18:1-4 before college. He ended up earning a Masters of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and today, he travels the world preaching the gospel. He's led three churches and served as a missionary in Japan. As Brushy Creek's Rescue Pastor, Jim fronts our missions and outreach efforts, including Celebrate Recovery.
There is no one better than this active mom of two to lead hundreds of our children, parents and volunteers in Creekside Kids. She gets it. Since accepting Christ in her bedroom at age eight, with her mother at her side, Lizzi-Beth’s heart has been focused on Jesus. At 16, she heard God call her to a life of ministry. The Seneca native attended Clemson University, before earning a Masters of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Creekside Kids has grown by leaps and bounds during her six-plus years at Brushy Creek.
Sheree is like so many of us, praying and waiting for God to show us the way for our life. She focused on raising her children and supporting her husband Chris. But a dream to lead other kids to Christ kept growing within her heart. She prayed across moves from Charlotte to Greenville, with responsibilities at different churches in each city. At every stop, God provided ways to build a career that has led to Brushy Creek preschoolers. Her heart is pure, her laugh contagious, and babies and toddlers love Miss Sheree!
Mark is a North Carolina native who majored in Christian studies at North Greenville. He worked in ministry for many years before becoming a police officer. After volunteering with Brushy Creek's middle and high school teens, he realized he wanted to return to ministry full-time. He and his wife Courtney have two young children, who keep them on pace to keep up with our high-energy students.
A familiar face at Brushy Creek is back on staff! Robbie led the Music Ministry for over a quarter of a century before retiring. God kept knocking at his heart and Robbie realized he had more service to give. Robbie is leading our fantastic group of Senior Adults in monthly activities. When he and his wife are not hanging out with their grandchildren, Robbie likes to golf and fish. His favorite restaurant? Waffle House!
The newest member of Brushy Creek's ministerial team, comes by way of the world. Julliard-trained Tom Barrett toured the globe as an opera singer, before following his heart to sing for Jesus. Tom grew up in the Baptist church in Virginia. He plays seven instruments and loves all types of music, from Bach to rock and bluegrass. You'll frequently see his wife and daughter singing alongside him during services. Off-stage, Tom likes to tinker with old cars and fish with his son.
Brushy Creek is delighted to have David Kay back fronting the service he originally helped create almost a decade ago, as we search for our next Contemporary Worship Pastor. David currently works for Eastern Industrial Cares as the Director of Eastern Cares, overseeing chaplains and company culture. It's a total joy to have him lead our 10:30am service in praise and worship during this time of transition.
